Up front, I will say that if Schalk had received a red I would have
been gutted, but it wouldn't have been undeserved. I believe the ref
couldn't be sure of what had occurred so went for a yellow to be safe
and the citing officer will sort it out. Fair or unfair, that is what
it is.
Now what gets me is how the Lions players and fans can use this as an
excuse for the loss. Do you really have to rely on playing against 14
men to win a game? Did his actions cause injury of some sort which
negatively affected the Lions?
Quote from Mike Phillips:
'It was a clear red card. It was simple, they should have played with
14 men for 79 minutes, and that would have given us a massive
advantage.
Burger clearly eye gouged. He should have been sent off because
that's the penalty.
True.
If that had happened the Lions would probably have won.
Also true, but not my point.
Sorry, but you are just being ridiculously partisan.
Perhaps it looks that way, but I think you're missing the intention of
my post.

Your point is valid, it is better to win against 15 oppo and not to rely
on one of them getting sent off. However, the fact that this incident
happened so soon after kickoff seems to imply that some players (one at
least) were more intent on playing GBH and not rugby.
I'm sure the SA posters will correct me but from what I've seen in the
past, Schalk Burger doesn't come across as your typical thug or hot head.
