This eventuality obviously happens from time to time - thats why its in the rules.
Dave, here in Australia, in different football codes there is precedent for teams losing their points because they played with too many players or the wrong players, etc. For the life of me, I can't name one instance, right now, off the top of my head, but I know it's happened.
Now, I'm not saying it's appropriate in this case (or not). I'm just pointing out that within the broader Australian sporting mindset there is an expectation that the issue (of points being docked) would be strongly considered particularly when the game was clearly effected by the mistake. Try-stopping tackles were made when too many players were on the field.
Now, from what you are saying, there's obviously a different mindset in SA, and I assume this is independent of the fact there was a South African team involved. Fair enough.
This is no doubt a mild cultural difference. One that's not covered explicitly by SANZAR.
