"Ashton remains as head coach but the RFU will continue the search for a
team manager and another specialist coach."

Whether you like him/rate him or not, he's out. He's in limbo land and the
RFU/Knob Andrew have basically said, you can stay there for the moment but
we're looking to recruit people to take over your job.

It would be a good time for him to ask for his money 'til the end of his
contract and walk.

Is this just another way of saying "nah nah nah nah naaaaaah nah,
we've got Edwards!"

As long as he keeps papering over the cracks, he'll stay. If the RFU
were to give him a contract of decent length, we might see some good
come out of him. If not, we'll just keep trotting out the same tired
old players. I can't believe this bit.........

I don't think that will happen - because the Regans and Gommersalls of
this world have permanently exited the England set up. The team is
being built around an axis of Sheridan, Borthwick, Haskell, Cipriani +
Croft, probably Ellis and Noon.

The key issue if Ashton stays is what kind of influence he can
exercise over Wells, who I would guess is fervently hoping Dean
Richards doesn't get offered the job. If Johnson comes in, Ashton will
walk rather than get sacked and I would expect to see a Wells-Healey-
Back coaching combination with Johnson as manager.

<snip>

MJ would do well to stay the hell away from this shambles. I'm
massively disappointed that at a time when what we need is someone to
bring on the next crop of youngsters with a gameplan to match their
skill, we're staying with the same stale dull old formula.

I personally think it will play out that everyone agrees that Ashton
will take the side to NZ after which he'll quietly exit. It's possible
Ashton will walk before the NZ tour - there's no disguising he's been
demoted and even if he could work alongside Johnson, the installation
of another layer of management would be too much.

The rumour mill is that Johnson is basically a shoe in, and the only
points of discussion are how to manage Johnson's entry with his> coaching team and Ashton's exit.- Hide quoted text -

The press are saying that MJ would have no rugby role, and there's no
way he'd put his name to a job like that and effectively become a
blazer. If he's involved, he'll have an input in the rugby. For that
reason, I agree with how you think it will play out IF he becomes
involved. My worst fear is nothing changing.
