Hey Lodi,

I've now downloaded the MP4 of the Blues vs Chiefs. Not sure if you
watched this one, but the content is very jerky, motion seems to play
for 5sec, then pause for 5sec (while the sound it still running). It's
virtually unwatchable. I'm using iTunes to view it - what do you suggest
to best view these games. Or is this file just a one-off bad egg?

Cheers,
Hamish.

Hi Hamish...You must have a pretty decent connection speed if you've
downloaded a gig in a few hours.

Personally I'd use VLC to watch any videos but others will have different
opinions...

This is from the AussieTorrents/Diwana FAQ:

5) Will I be able to play this file back on my Mac/PC/Linux box? What
format is the video in?

AussieTorrents has tried to provide sports matches in the highest
possible quality in the most universally compatible formats.

Matches are encoded in either xvid codec (MPEG-4 ASP) or x264 / h264
codec (MPEG-4 AVC).

For xvid files, any media player with an MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple
Profile) decoder should be able to play the files without modification,
such as Windows Media Player. Recently, AussieTorrents has begun using a
newer codec known as either "x264" or "h264. This is a newer codec that
is expected to supercede mpeg-4 ASP in many applications. x264 / h264 is
also referred to as MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Codec).

6) Why x264? why not stick with xvid/divx?

Deciding which codec/format that the matches should be stored in is based
on a couple important requirements.
1) The format should be an open, non-proprietary format
2) The format should be available for a number of platforms (Windows,
Mac, Linux)
3) The format should offer reasonably good quality video at a practical
file size (700MB-1.4GB)

The new x.264 codec's performance at low/medium bitrates (600-900kbits/
sec) is vastly supperior to the performance of the xvid codec at these
bitrates.

7) I can't get this x264 / h264 file to play on my computer, what do I do?

For Windows users go to http://x264.nl/ and download and install the
ffdshow version there. You should now to able to play x264 / h264 videos
in Windows Media Player.

Under Linux, download either VLC or Mplayer to play the files.

On Macintosh, VLC and Quicktime can be used.
