FWIW stamp to the head I would card; otherwise what is the stampee
doing over the ball., let the players police it I say, although there
were moments as I lay over a ball when I thought otherwise.
Vickery's stamp wasn't caught by the officials, but if you have the
coverage you can just about see it - 18:33 into the first half,
Vickery is standing guard on the right-hand side of the ruck, then
stands on Leamy's lower thigh/back of knee which was hanging out the
side of the ruck. You can't really see where he connects in that
angle, but you can hear the crowd reaction.
Not that it matters much.. He's probably lucky though, given the mood
the disciplinary commission are in today - 8 weeks to Flannery and
Audebert, even though both had a defence.
All in all I thought the ref wasn't bad, certainly he was good by the
standards of some of the displays we've seen - I'm glad Malcolm
Changleng is hanging up his boots and Alain Rolland has not increased
his credit in my eyes, nor Debney ?. From what I've seen and heard,
this game apart which was quite well reffed and produced a
representative score, too many teams have been gifted close games and
bonus points. In pool 5 that has been a critical difference.
Wasps, despite my grief at the weekend, didn't deserve to win the
pool.
The Changleng brothers are a bit notorious, in any game they officiate
you can assume at the final whistle the word "controversial" will be
getting a good airing by the analysts.
Rolland I've always thought is a good ref, though he did miss a few
calls in recent games. Still, much I think is down to ever-increasing
camera angles and analysts picking up more incidents which referees
couldn't hope to catch in real-time without replays. The only effect
it has is to make referees to look even more incompetent than we
already assumed they were.
Tough job.
From an English pov a contributor to Wasp's problems this season has
been the demands made the National teams. They are faced with a real
possibility of having over half the 1st choice squad away playing for
their countries and I believe that has a knock on effect in three
ways. The simple and obvious is league position. That will create an
effect (positive or negative) on will and belief within the club and
that will in turn have an impact in other, cup competitions. And this
could all as easily have happened to Munster or whoever.
I do not believe for a moment that Wasps and Leicester are not the all
round best clubs in England, nor do i believe that sarries, LI and
Gloucester are. I could see Wasps or Leicester winnning the HC from
the quarters - I hope one of the others will, but just, somehow doubt
that we will not see Munster or Toulose hoisting the HC.
The problem is even more acute in Ireland, where the Irish squad is -
by and large - selected from two teams, Leinster and Munster. Munster
lose their first-choice 1-10 for pretty much every preseason training
camp, November international, 6N, and every training session in
between. Little wonder we get slated for not taking the Magners League
seriously. How can you expect to have any kind of continuity or build
any momentum through the season when your first choice pack & half
backs are taken away en-block for much of the season?
