Re: Jake White and politics and the Watsons

Again, you don't seem to be making an argument here. I agree Luke
Watson being included was indefensible.>>

Sorry. I will draw the conclusion for you. Here it is: Jake White has
demonstrated with his actions as coach over 4 years that he is NOT a
racist.
In fact, he has demonstrated that he takes extra care to develope
black talent.

I agree, I just didn't realise you were saying that. I don't think
Jake White has any particular desire to see more blacks in the team or
'develop black talent', I think he just wants the best team on the
park. Which in a sports team is what you want the coach to think :p

<<Here's a better option: reject both x and y. We can conclude that
Jake

is probably not a racist, and Cheeky probably hasn't been pulling the
strings as Jake seems to think he does. Isn't that more reasonable?>>

No. Because the question remains: WHO pulled the strings? It is clear
strings were pulled. It is clear Cheeky KNEW strings were pulled. It
is clear Luke knew that strings were being pulled.

Who do you think pulled the strings?

My argument is that there is no one person pulling the strings. While
it is convenient to find one person to blame, I would argue that the
mechanisms of populist democracy in a country like South Africa (due
to people having strong feelings about racial issues and the legacy of
apartheid) lend themselves to these kind of situations. It's like John
Howard saying Murali chucks- he's trying to find a common thread with
the Australian people. If politicians think they can be in-line with
popular opinion (or even just get name recognition) by supporting Luke
Watson's inclusion in the Boks, then by God they'll do it!

I don't think you can say it was Cheeky 'riding the system'- it was a
whole bunch of people 'using the system'. And from what he says,
neither Cheeky nor Luke was particularly enamoured by the whole turn
of events. They say they were embarrassed.

In saying this, at the time I seem to remember Luke saying he 'didn't
care about the circumstances'... I think he would have come out of it
a lot better if he refused the call-up.
