"The World Cup hopes of Greg Somerville are hanging in the balance as
the Canterbury prop undergoes eye surgery on Tuesday.
He suffered the injury in the Air New Zealand Cup win over Bay of
Plenty in Christchurch at the weekend.
Somerville suffered a retinal tear in his right eye in the match and
will undergo the procedure in Christchurch on Tuesday. He will be out
of rugby for several weeks..."
Several weeks? You'd think that would automatically rule him out of
the World Cup but instead Hansen says "As far as Greg's availability
for Rugby World Cup selection is concerned, we will monitor his
progress over the next few weeks and the selectors will make a
decision in due course."
New Zealanders picked their coaches. I don't think "intelligence" is
regarded at any level in New Zealand and that's probably why they made the
choice they did. Pity for the boy, I hope he has a full recovery however
long it takes. I can recall a former Welsh international being forced to
quit the game because of a detached retina. His sight was far more important
than playing rugby for Wales.
