Right. Wading right in here to bat for the New Zealanders...
New Zealand gloriously defeated the pitiful English at the Rugby Sevens
in the poorly-contested final at the Commonwealth Games.
After crushing a laboured and uncreative Australian team, including the
much-vaunted but poorly-performing Lote Tuqiri, in the semi-finals, the
apogee of perfection in Sevens rugby known as the New Zealand team
out-defended, out-attacked and out-played the whinging Poms. In front
of a hostile crowd of descendants of criminals, racist bullies and
six-fingered nationals of the host nation, the New Zealand team were
utterly unstoppable, a crushing force knowing no limits, no boundaries.
England's overconfidence knew no bounds when they elected to not pull
in any Six Nations players out of the first teams to play in this
magnificent competition, and it showed. A flat and uninspired England
could barely tolerate the pace of the game by the fleet-footed Kiwis;
to the delight of the thousands of New Zealand supporters, wave after
wave of black talent crossed the English line until the much larger,
greater-populated country's representative team were crushed into a
layer of fine white powder on their own goal line.
As a consolation to the poor, untalented mother country, New Zealand
graciously allowed a try through in the final minutes to put the score
29-21. As the wilting red rose of English pride withered under the
intense glare of the New Zealander's pride in their magnificent
achievement, the crowd came to their feet as one and cheered so loud it
seemed that the rafters of the Telstra Dome would shake themselves
apart.
The team having achieved the pinnacle of sporting excellence at the
most important code in the Commonwealth Games, other New Zealand
athletes chose to bow down and selectively let the Australian, Scottish
and English teams win a few inconsequential events like swimming,
athletics, shooting, gymnastics, triathlon, weightlifting, and so on,
just so the other elite sportspeople of the world didn't lose hope and
go home, beat their spouses and kick their pets.
It seems a shame, the total dominance of a code by a country of 4
million people, where 2 million are ineligible by dint of their gender
to play for the incredibly talented national team, but it's not. New
Zealand supporters are the purest supporters in the world; never
cirtical of their teams, always ready with a kind word for a defeated
adversary. The only shame in this wonderous story is that the rest of
the world cannot all be New Zealanders, and cannot achieve the lofty
heights of achievement as only New Zealanders can.

In all seriousness, well played England, it speaks volumes of the team
that it took 4 ring-ins from the S14 to be able to defeat the English,
and only by 8 points, and only in the finals. Thoroughly deserved of
the silver medal.
I'm ruefully glad I got to witness, firsthand, one of NZ's only gold
medals. Never been so elated in my life.
