I played as a kid in the '60's up until the 90's. Can not remember this
being a rule if it ever was? The proviso was that the arms had to be
used. Do not see the harm in contact above the wrist and below the
neck. The ability to stop the off load is just as important as the the
ability to off load.
And every deliberate lift as dangerous play? Just like it used to be?
Would make sense to make any form of lifting regardless of "spearing"
or not dangerous play. Would make the defender drive into the tackle
after contact and continue to drive until the ball carrier fell.
