Sorry, this isn't a constructive reply, but it's the only way I could
think of to ask a very boring question.
For me [with Firefox] the RSR menu of recent topics is now largely
masked by a really boring rec.sport.rowing label down the lhs of the
screen. No "reduce" or "close" box that I could see.
Please [simpleton here] how do I get rid of that?

Use a real NNTP newsreader, not google groups.

I prefer Thunderbird (which does email, too). Download it (free)
install it, contact your ISP to find out what their NNTP server
information is, set up Thunderbird accordingly.

Google Groups is an awful, awful way to read & reply to newsgroups.

I hear this argument alot. Unfortunately there are plenty of ISPs who
authenticate NNTP users based on the source IP address, ie. to make
sure it's one of there's, which stuffs up using a proper news reader
except at home. RSR is my only use of Usenet and Usenet access alone
is not enough for most people to switch ISPs. Google Groups has flaws
but it is free and pervasive.

Richard, does reloading the page or relaunching Firefox help?

I have not ever used it, but I've heard their "free" service is fine for people who only want to read text based NNTP groups (i.e. no binary posting/downloading... which if you want is available for a monthly fee)
