What sort of boats does your group have, or is this a solo?
Solo right now, I have a Maas 24, a guideboat with a drop-in rig, an older
wherry type shell, and a few kayaks. I'm in the guideboat right now, it's
quite seaworthy in rough water but still a small boat. I'm not inviting
anyone out with the current weather conditions.

What sort
of body of water?

It's the Great South Bay, between a barrier beach (Fire Island) and Long
Island. My part of the bay is fairly large and somewhat volatile.

Do you have a USCG Auxiliary there? Sometimes
they are eager to be 'on call backup'. I've done that with ours, and
indeed
they often like training opportunities. I'd planned to set a couple up
with ours, and have been irresponsible and lazy about it.

I'm sure we do, I will check that out.

How long a row?

I'm doing short rows now of about five miles and staying within a half-mile
of shore. In the summer and fall I do 8 to 12, sometimes longer. I would
like to get in shape for the Blackburn challenge, which is approx. 22 miles.

I thought the Spot and EPIRB were two different technologies, both using
different satellite? Is this combined somehow in your product?

You are right, I thought EPIRB was a generic term, but it's not. Spot is an
alternate technology with different satellites.

I read about this stuff a couple years ago, I was thinking of using it
for my
Sacramento River row but it was simply too expensive(EPIRB), and SPOT
was pretty new at the time. I found out that
ppl monitor marine band in the river area, though not at my lake so I
just
brought that along.

I understood then that SPOT would be good for monitoring progress, but
it was unreliable signal, so I imagined someone watching my signal go
out deciding I was in big trouble when I wasn't.

I intend to sign up for the progress monitoring service, which is about $50
a year. I will let you know how the signal is. So far it seems reliable on
open water.

I have two college aged kids, daughter and son, making a bike trip
together
this week down the NorCal coast for their spring break. (some party
animals, huh?).

If I had a signal on those two I'd monitor it like a crazy man. I get a
call at night when they
make camp, it'll have to do. Good thing, huh? It's hard not to hover.

:^)

Yeah, a continuous signal might not be best:-) I biked the coast highway
from the LA area to San Luis Obispo about 25 years ago, loved it.
