Re: Sinusitis

Hi all,
I was wondering dose anyone have any experience of sinusitis and its
affect on ones athletic performance.
Since January my performance in training has been steadily slipping
until early May when I collapsed for the want of a better word at
training. I had been experiencing a cough since January with blocked
sinus on and off.
I had bought a heart rate monitor in early April and found that my ut2
split was 1:57 an increase of 4 since the last time I used a heart
rate monitor. My 5k and 2k times have been completely off my usual
pace.Whats more my the rate at which my heart rate recovers is about 4
times longer than usual if not more but paradoxically my morning
resting heart rate remains steady.
Dose anyone have any experience of training with sinusitis? Are theses
symptoms typical? Or are they possibly connected with something more
sreious? My doctor did mention hyperthrophic cardiomyopathy.

My sculling career, such as it was, was bedevilled by sinus problems, with resting symptoms ranging from pain in the sinuses through to the vilest of ever-running nose, drainage down the throat & catarrh. I still managed to win a few - in competition I'd get 1 good regatta, followed by a dreadful washout for the next one. Yet, so I thought, I didn't feel that bad. But clearly I was short of sleep due to nasal congestion & probably no fun to have around.

Rowers are slow to seek medical help - well, I was. We think that if we keep training it'll pass. I recall one important race, a HRR eliminator, except that I recall nothing except starting the race. I stayed in the boat, but apparently many lengths down. Don't remember landing. Do remember feeling very foolish afterwards.

In those days the "cure" was a bit mechanical - my sinuses were flushed through. I won't repeat the exact mechanical details, for which I was anything but prepared & directly after which I drove myself home. But for me it really worked. Unfortunately, other events prevented me from continuing training at that level. Tough!

If I were you, I'd seek treatment asap.

Good luck -
Carl
