brains to avoid drugs etc will survive to produce offspring and

(again hopefully) passing on their genes to their offspring.
natural selection may not always involve physical attributues but
intellectual and cognitive skills too. just an idea.

1) Smoking, drinking and other drug use generally don't kill someone
before they've had a chance to pass on their genes. (All those
things are stupid, but are not necessarily carried out by totally
stupid people. Addiction is a very common human difficulty - some
are more prone to it than others - and some are more able to
overcome it than others.)

2) And then perfectly sensible people may be killed by the
stupidity, or stupid habits of others.

Your idea doesn't hold up to any scrutiny.

Humans are more complex than your theory allows for. Just because
you do say some pretty stupid things, I wouldn't assume you are not
sensible enough to have been in the trusted and privileged position
of teacher. Am I making my point?

i was going to add at the time that the general sub class of
individuals who do partake of large quantities of drugs and alcohol
may also be likely to indulge in a fair bit of unprotected sex, either
because of the socio-economic group they live in or because they are
so out of it most of the time that the coordination and thought
processes required to put on a condom are just beyond them, therefore
actuallly these are the most likely people to produce offspring (and
usually in large quantites too) well before they have expired from
lung cancer or liver disease or whatever, but i decided not to add
that. so yes my idea, considering the propensity of certain sub
classes of society to engage in drug abuse and sexual activity leading
to the production of viable offspring, is not entirely able to hold
water if examined closely.

anyway that is a pretty low and unnecessary comment to make; "I

and priviledged position of teacher" well thanks for that! why on
earth would you question whether or not i am sensible enough to be a
teacher? have you seen me teach? whatever i may post on here has no
bearing on my skills as an educator or my level of professionalism in
the classroom, why would it? to my mind only those who really are in a
position to have watched me teach or been onthe receiving end of my
teaching are really in a position to comment on my ability to teach or
whether i am 'sensible' enough for the job, and I don't think that
includes anyone on this forum unless I am very much mistaken.
And next time i am facing a pupil who is threatening to kick my head
in or cut me up or is busy throwing a chair at me i shall remind
myself what a 'priviledged' position i am in.

The point I was making is precisely the opposite to that which you are
answering. I was pointing out that I do NOT make any assumptions about you
(specifically your suitability for teaching) just from reading your posts.
Whereas you seem to make sweeping assumptions about many people (smokers
etc) from one aspect of their behaviour.

Yes, being a teacher is a privileged position. 'Him indoors' was a
secondary school teacher in a deprived area for many years. I was a GP in
the same area, so I am happy to confirm that most smokers, heavy drinkers
and other drug addicts have many good qualities, which would be worth
passing on to a new generation (if it was my position to judge, which it
isn't). I can also confirm that such people do avail themselves of
contraception services. As it happens, my research done locally showed that
unplanned pregnancies occur in all ages of women (of childbearing age) and
in all strata of society.
