Mike -
The following website is only half on topic - the right place, the right weekend, but a different event. Even so I thought you might enjoy taking a look at it. I must tell you that when I first read it I couldn't stop chuckling.
http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/947524.html
"Precision trumps power! A near-septuagenarian single skuller victorious!"
I scull with the guy almost every day, and I can tell you he is in great shape. He probably is more fit than the vast majority of 20 year olds. But glancing at the article in the Sacramento Bee one might think that people at Lake Natoma last weekend were witness to a true miracle.
I sent the article to Dan, who printed it and gave it to David this morning. David read it a few hours before I arrived. I told him that after reading the article I wasn't sure that I shouldn't have brought along one of the spare walkers we have in the basement. I mean, after all isn't he "a near-septuagenarian?" I am surprised he can even stand up.
Well, every news story has to come with an angle, doesn't it?
But good for David! We're all proud of him. He said his race strategy was to row as hard as he could the first 500 meters and get ahead of everyone, then not allow anyone to gain on him the rest of the race. He told me the last 1500 meters he just coasted. He took long strokes, kept the rate fairly low, and (this is for you, Paul) tried as hard as he could not the check the shell. His shell, by the way, was a Wintech 1x. And yes, for anyone who is curious, it was loaned to him specifically for this weekend by Wintech.
Cordially,
Charles
