It was a few years ago and I think the picture was found on the web
somewhere so it wasn't anyone we knew! I'll see if I can find any
references when I get home. The owner of the leg was very definately
not smiling! I don't see it at all unlikely for a bow to go through
someone's leg if it is not adequately protected and is as sharp as
some (needlessly) seem to be. There are plenty of accounts of
penetrating injuries around.
