"Goof" - typo or intended :) I think there may be an element of
"we're the experts, don't try this at home" with the references to
"cutting equipment" etc. It also sensationalises the story a little
which is generally considered more important than the bare facts.

While it probably isn't a concern for the media, I'm starting to
wonder if "putting people off their breakfast" is the best way to get
some safety messages across. Pictures and accounts of protruding bones
or bows piercing bodies may not be particularly pleasant, but evidence
of the gruesome consequences seems to grab a bit more attention. Our
club's safety policy used to have a picture of a man with the bow of a
boat sticking through his leg which certainly drew some comments.
Unfortunately there are always those who think it'll never happen to
them - until it does.
