A major part of the problem was that many coxes obviously had no idea how to
handle a boat in a non-negligible stream, in particular not realising that
if they came in bow first then their stern would be swept round by the
current and anyone grabbing their bowman's blade would only be pulling
their bow up the bank.

M2 even managed to land without anyone on the bank pulling them in -
probably not very impressive to those of you who spend all your time on the
Tideway, but very good compared to many of the crews earlier in the day,
and even some in the same division.
Chris - I'm not sure that Tideway experience would be any use at all!
- if I've understood you correctly, and you are describing crews
making landfall while travelling WITH a non-negligible stream???
IMHO the master of any vessel which does that on the Tideway should
expect difficult interviews with club captain and/or treasurer. There
might also be an incident report due for the navigation leading up to
the landfall.
Maybe I've got this very wrong. If there's foreseeable need to bring
boats to the bank in this way, then I guess strength of following
stream features largely in each June's May risk assessment?
Apologies if I've totally misread you, Richard
The view point of a number of "old sages" on the bank was that these
kind of stream conditions haven't been seen since the winter of 2001.
Because of the ways crews have to marshall for bumps- I can't see any
way that we could have landed against the stream. Very strong stream
conditions are very rare on the Cam (whose stream is normally so
negligable that the racing line totally ignores it!).
Have to admit though that had Chris not pointed out to me that backing
my boat into my space would be a far better option I would have made a
mess of my parking as well!
What surprised me was the large number of crews who were ignoring the
marshalls (this being Mens div 2).
As for the Girton W2 issue- she has been stroking the vet boat- and
didn't get back in time due to the slowness of the stream then a
puncture (i'm told she ran down the course to baits bite to find her
crew). Her replacement is an experienced cox (on tideway etc) but has
done very few bumps here.
Out of interest, was wondering how many of the top crews who rowed
over changed their line on the reach- did people stick to the towpath
side seeking shelter from the wind and avoiding the stream, or did
they just stick to the racing line (and fight against the stream in
full flow)?
Oh- and thanks to those who posted with the suggestions about striding
for my crew- we have currently gone up 2 and will be looking to bump
again today, so your advice helped loads!
