...Back to topic, does this
understanding about the athleticism of race car driving in any
way validate this insipidly vacant quote about 'good losers'?
Noop. I agree with you completely about the quote.
There's another aspect of it I can't quite get past, and
that's the seeming prevalence of past famous race car drivers
offspring in the front row.
I'll save it for the next time we stray into this.
I won't! ;^)
Two comments:
1) Don't you think athletic talent can be passed down genetically to
some extent?
of course!
Talent is tough to come by.
and
2) In *any* endeavor, it never hurts to have connections and money.
Sons of famous drivers have both connections and money. They may or
may not have #1 above.
He who has both 1 & 2 will likely take pole position a few times in his
career. He who has only #2 won't make it. He who has only #1 will
make it if he is very motivated and hard working, and lucky... just as
the fathers of whom you speak were.
It would be interesting to compare the success rates of
kids of successful golfers vs kids of successful drivers and
how many won major races.
It would also be interesting to compare across sports.
I know of a pro football player who was son of a successful
pro golfer. Any race car drivers have kids who play pro
football or pro baseball or pro basketball? pro skateboarding
or surfing or motocross?
successful pro football players/ basketball players/ etc have
kids who are successful in a wide variety of sports, even
at the pro level.
In that case, I believe the youngsters gain genetic and
social support, financial support for coaching, but they
don't directly ride their dad's gravy train into the big leagues
in some sort of inheritance deal.
