As a former, reasonably good sculler, I have a gripe with many

singles events.
A very interesting point.
Has anyone ever done an analysis of regatta entry type over years? Even
if just on one regatta?
I wouldn't be surprised to see a shift away from the previous core
events of most provincial regattas eg S3 and Novice coxed eights/fours
to a multitude of smaller boat classes heavily loaded with junior
events...
Does the ARA monitor this thought of thing to understand their
membership and its needs? (I'm sure I can hear some UK RSR members
laughing ;0)). It would make an interesting article in the ARA
magazine...
Re regattas, how many other people scan past results to see whether it
is worth going? When I was a Captain, I'd avoid taking my club to
regattas that in the past have had mainly straight finals (unless
another reason to go eg supporting local/region events) and I'd support
regattas that had great regatta secretaries who kept you informed of
situations and suggested other events or solutions,,,,
