In our experience, you put a lot of effort into coaching the
experienced athletes, but new boats for them and neglect the rest of
the club. Then they decide they'd rather wear black all-in-ones that
your tasteful navy and blue ones, and b*****r off down the river.
So give me the novices every time! They're more loyal and a lot more
fun.

Even easier for us, we would show the ex GB athletes our restricted 4s and
they would turn some shade of green (and not from envy) and disappear up or
down river to a club focused on performance! We had 12 new novices last
night, ages from 25 to 55, all brought out by the prospect of an outing on
a peaceful bit of the Thames and 'having a go' - most will join us,at least
or the summer, all will learn to row to their personal level of
satisfaction, I doubt any will ever row in an ARA regatta, hopefully they
will all have fun, and some will get a little fitter.
In shades of another thread, rowing may, or may not be 'posh', but it
certainly has a rendency to be 'elitist' in this country, with a great deal
of focus on 'performance' and top rate competition, hopefully there is still
space for the 'common' man(or woman) - ie middle aged, overweight, unfit,
but wants to have fun and enjoy the water - and hopefully at laest some
clubs will try hard to be welcoming to that constituency.
