As a former, reasonably good sculler, I have a gripe with many
regattas.Unfortunately, it is much more profitable to lay on a junior
eights race than an senior sculling event and thus when a regatta
becomes over subscribed, the first events to be chopped are the senior
singles events.
The competition review was supposed to be looking at the creating a
national framework of regattas, working in harmony with each other.
I understand that its work ground to a halt in the face of entrenched
"Nimbyism". For many clubs, their regatta is an important source of
revenue and thus they will lay on the events that will raise the most
money and not those events that might be good for the sport in the long
term.
Having spent the period up to Henley and the Nat Champs in crew boats,
many open class oarsmen and women want race in smaller boats but there
is little oportinity to do so as few of the regattas offer suitable
events.
