rowing and the movies #4735

A couple of days ago I saw "Mrs Henderson Presents", in which Mrs Henderson
(played by Judi Dench) likes to spend her occasional meditative moments
paddling around in a big old rowie on a lovely calm stretch of tree-lined
river. At one point a couple of sweep fours in training whiz past her. It
really is a "blink and you missed it" shot of them, but to me it appeared in
that brief moment that they were rowed by real rowers and had realistically
replicated the equipment and rowing styles of the era (late 1930s). So
congratulations to the movie makers for making the effort to get that right.

I'm also told the movie features lots of naked women, but I was
concentrating on the rowing, so didn't notice them.
