(OT) Can a virus/spyware change bios settings?

Here's the deal:
1. I was given a laptop to fix because it wouldn't boot into windows.
"Operating system not found" message would appear when booting. I
thought the hard drive had crashed. Everything in the bios looked ok.
2. I tried accessing the data using an Ubuntu Linux live cd. This
little method has work for me before. No luck, I would get an error in
relation to the hard disk.
3. It turned out the data on the laptop was not vital because they had
backed up the data to a flash drive a few days before. So after
reinstalling windows and booting up for the first time, "Operating
system not found" appeared again.
4. I for sure thought the hard disk was toast but I checked out the
bios again. On the boot sequence menu I noticed the hard drive had a
"+" next to it. After expanding the "+", an "!" appeared next to the
hard drive. I highlighted the "!" and pressed "shift+1" to enable the
hard drive. The laptop works now.
The owners said they had been infected with a "virus or something"
because the computer started acting very slow and they were getting
lots of popups. So, can a virus/spyware change bios settings as to
disable the hard drive? I wouldn't think so but you never know.
