Five years ago, elite Pakistani troops stationed near the border with
Afghanistan began receiving hundreds of pairs of U.S.-made night-
vision goggles that would enable them to see and fight al-Qaeda and
Taliban insurgents in the dark. The sophisticated goggles, supplied by
the Bush administration at a cost of up to $9,000 a pair, came with an
implicit message: Step up the attacks.

But every three months, the troops had to turn in their goggles for
two weeks to be inventoried, because the U.S. military wanted to make
sure none were stolen or given away, U.S. and Pakistani officials
said. Militants perceived a pattern and scurried into the open without
fear during the two-week counts.

"They knew exactly when we didn't have the goggles, and they took full
advantage," said a senior Pakistani government official who closely
tracks military operations on the border.

Hmm ... as far as the night goggles go, seems to me a staggering
inventory checkup would keep the enemy guessing.

uh-huh. Yeah. "keep them guessing"

Actually that is a good idea, if the enemy is used to a pattern use
that against them. In Vietnam one of the big air war successes was
when the US figured that the North's fighter pilots had all the US
bomber call signs and schedules, so they mixed the signs and gave them
to fighters. The MiGs came up expecting bombers and got F-4 Phantoms
and the US shot down a lot of MiGs.

I don't know what you

are trying to get at, but this certainly has nothing to do with
bombing Iran and taking out their nuclear capabilities.- Hide quoted text -

It gets to the heart that we can't even get Afghanistan and Iraq under
control and our "allies" are in some cases worse than our actual
enemies. And yet we still believe we can tame the entire Middle East
with force.

Just like we "tamed" Vietnam.

Actually yeah. The Vietnamiation strategy. Of course VN was promised
air support and resupply if they were attacked. The US refused to
provide them when the time come, and when the South ran out of
supplies their military collapsed.
