two weeks to be inventoried, because the U.S. military wanted to make
sure none were stolen or given away, U.S. and Pakistani officials
said. Militants perceived a pattern and scurried into the open without
fear during the two-week counts.

"They knew exactly when we didn't have the goggles, and they took full
advantage," said a senior Pakistani government official who closely
tracks military operations on the border.

It gets to the heart that we can't even get Afghanistan and Iraq under
control and our "allies" are in some cases worse than our actual
enemies. And yet we still believe we can tame the entire Middle East
with force.

Just like we "tamed" Vietnam.

Umm, the goal was never to tame anyone by force. The goal was regime
change in Iraq and to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons that
would destroy a whole lot of people, avoiding the mistake of the mid
1900s where folks cowered to Hitler.
