"Last year Del Rio ran a trick play in which former college
quarterback-turned-NFL receiver
Matt Jones ran the huddle and lined up at quarterback. When Jones, who
is white, broke the huddle as QB, the crowd at Alltel Stadium rose to
its feet and gave Jones a thunderous ovation. Wow."
- ESPN.com columnist Jason Whitlock (who is black) making a comment
about why Byron Leftwich isn't beloved in Jacksonville. To him, the
above is evidence that Jacksonville is a town that really wants a white
QB running the team.
Things for Whitlock to consider:
1) People were SCREAMING for Leftwich to replace Brunell, despite the
fact that Leftwich was a rookie.
2) Maybe the ovation was because they recognized the trick play, much
the same way Hines Ward or Antwaan Randle El (who aren't white) would
have recieved an ovation last year if he'd broken the huddle for the
Steelers instead of Ben Roethlisburger (who IS white).
