Hitman yearns for Calgary from Italy
By TJ MADIGAN - Calgary Sun
If getting back to Calgary was as easy as clicking your wrestling boots
together and saying "there's no place like home", Bret Hart would
probably have some pretty bruised ankles.
The Hitman, a proud Calgarian who currently spends the majority of his
time in Italy, is suffering from a major case of homesickness.
Hart lives with his wife, Cinzia, close to Milan and just a few hours
from Torino, in a small town near the base of the Alps.
He jokingly calls his situation 'the ultimate sacrifice'.
"I love Italy and it's a great place, but Calgary is always going to be
home for me," Hart told the Calgary Sun. "My wife is from Italy, and
I'm doing everything in my power to try to talk her into coming to
Canada. I always thought Calgary was the nicest, safest, friendliest
place in the world, but I'm having a tough job selling that to her."
It was true love that finally convinced the Hitman to move from the
city, a change he avoided even during his travel-heavy grappling
career.
"I had lots of chances to move, and it would have been much easier if I
lived on the east coast when I was wrestling," he said. "I would have
had much shorter trips and been home a heck of a lot more.
"But I've never had any desire to live anywhere else. Even though the
Calgary weather is a bit tough, I've come to like it. And I'd take
Calgary over Toronto any day."
Conversation with Hart sometimes sounds like a tourism brochure for the
Stampede City, but it's more than just talk. Hart gets home as often as
possible, and even made a recent trek back across the pond to follow
Team Canada's Olympic quest.
"I actually came all the way home to watch the Olympics," he said. "I'd
never get to watch that on TV in Italy, they don't show the hockey.
Although, I was pretty disappointed with the Olympic thing in the end.
I really wanted to see Canada win the gold."
