I just put in an order for 2 minis with a gig of ram in each. One's
going in the living room, the other the bedroom. I'm not even going to
hook up a keyboard to the bedroom machine... just a 3d wireless mouse.
I'm just going to use it as a multimedia server.
I use mine as a file server. Sharepoints plus an endless supply of
daisychained firewire drives and you're set. I've got about a terrabyte of
removable storage that's being served by the mini, and all of it takes up
less space that a monitor's footprint.
I've still got the Big Blue Beast running. It's a machine that I put
together after my 1.5Ghz AMD system started spitting capacitors like
watermelon seeds... but the only box the had capable of cooling all the crap
I have is one of the boxes with the side cutout and the blue glowing fans.
I suppose I could buy enclosures for all those drives (about 500 gigs), but
some of them are likely near the end of their lifecycle, so I'll just get
some LaCie Big Disks when they die.
And here's the best part...all of our MP3s are in iTunes. All 4000 albums.
It's taken us a looooong time to get them in there and all organized, but
now they're there and shared all over the house. Same with iPhoto. We use
both for all our photo and music stuff.
I'm eventually going to build a collection of high quality MP3s and lossless
recordings (classical stuff). Every so often, I love to chill and just
listen to some nice classical music. My deal is that I have to be in the
mood to listen to music. I find it distracting for the most part while
working, which is a shame, because I built a blues collection that I love.
Get an Xbox 360, and get yourself a little program called "Connect360".
Now, that iTunes library AND iPhoto directory are shared with the Xbox360,
which of course is connected to the HiDef TV and the Theater System. With
this system (which is also connected to the rest of the house via the
multi zone reciever) you can browse all albums by artist, title, etc, and
create playlists that can be listened to in the main room of the house
thru the entertainment system, or just piped to any other room of the
house (and naturally, the garage).
I'm going to wait and see how the PS3 turns out before committing to a
console. I'm thinking that either the 360 or PS3 will be the toy I spring
on my employees this Christmas. 360s will probably be way more plentiful,
tho, which is good, because I'll probably have in the neighborhood of 80
employees by that time between my shops here and the new ones I'm opening up
in Deer Park and Houston.
It's just a seamlessly perfect system that's all run now on my Powerbook,
and will soon be nothing more than a Mini and a little stack of hard
drives. It's just brilliant. You'll LOVE the mini and the software.
With that stack, do you have any issues with heat? I only have Tivo
capabilities in the living room and could see maybe adding a 3rd party DVR
thingy to the mini in the bedroom... but one of the things I don't want is a
bunch of heat coming from the electronics at night.
