By and large I agree with my esteemed colleague here, so I'll just highlight
some standout points:
"sheroes" - fucking asininely politically "correct" and really undermines
the credibility of the authors.
"Most of these workers had lost their homes, and had not heard from members
of their families, yet they stayed and provided the only infrastructure for
the 20% of New Orleans that was not under water." - God bless them. We
WNYers old enough to remember the Blizzard of '77 were wondering why the
citizens weren't banding together to help each other like we did. Surprise,
surprise, we just weren't hearing about it.
"The buses never arrived. We later learned that the minute the arrived to
the City limits, they were commandeered by the military." - That just sucks.
The citizens gave one hell of an effort. The military probably thought they
were doing the right thing.
"The guards told us that that was our problem...
We walked to the police command center at Harrah's on Canal Street and were
told the same thing...
The commander turned to the crowd and stated emphatically, "I swear to you
that the buses are there."..." - Obvious uselessness of the NO police (note
to Slater, also likely union, FWIW)
"As we approached the bridge, armed Gretna sheriffs formed a line across the
foot of the bridge. Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing
their weapons over our heads...
Just as dusk set in, a Gretna Sheriff showed up, jumped out of his patrol
vehicle, aimed his gun at our faces, screaming, "Get off the fucking
freeway". A helicopter arrived and used the wind from its blades to blow
away our flimsy structures. As we retreated, the sheriff loaded up his truck
with our food and water." - These motherfuckers need to lose their job at
the very least. I now understand why nobody could walk to safety, at least
in that direction. Damn.
As I was proofreading this I also remembered the Sunday news shows wondering
why food, water, and tents hadn't been delivered to the people on the
highway. Who the hell would imagine it had been taken away? Screw firing
these assholes, lock 'em up!
"We 8 were caught in a press of humanity as flights were delayed for several
hours while George Bush landed briefly at the airport for a photo op." - If
this doesn't fully demonstrate he's damned if he does and he's damned if he
doesn't I don't know what the *** will. It also demonstrates a fundamental
difference between Sept.11th and Katrina. On Sept.11th there was no air
traffic for Bush to bung up so he could fly freely into NY. Here, great
arrangements had to be made. Hell, I remember all the hub bub and ado when
Bush came to Buffalo, and that was just a "whistle stop".
"Those who managed to make it out with any possessions (often a few
belongings in tattered plastic bags) we were subjected to two different
dog-sniffing searches." - That's just bull***, but airline security has
pretty much been a joke anyway.
"Yet, no food had been provided to the men, women, children, elderly,
disabled as they sat for hours waiting to be "medically screened" to make
sure we were not carrying any communicable diseases. - I just wonder about
the quotes on medically screened. Did they not think it necessary, or not
think it a valid, thorough screening? As they are paramedics I'll give them
the benefit of the doubt and guess the latter. Probably air security at work
again.
"Throughout, the official relief effort was callous, inept, and racist." -
And by and large, tho not entirely, a local affliction.
I would also like to reinforce Torrey's point that we stand for less
government. Please notice that whenever private citizens were in charge
things were fair and orderly. When the govt, any govt, got involved
corruption and incompetence were the theme of the day. Still want John Kerry
in charge? Hillary Clinton?
Thank you, C the Shocker for posting this. Seriously. This stuff needs to be
heard and remembered.
And now, with a tip of the hat to Jerry Springer, I leave you with one final
thought:
"...warm, heart-felt reception given to us by the ordinary Texans. We saw
one airline worker give her shoes to someone who was barefoot. Strangers on
the street offered us money and toiletries with words of welcome." - Whether
Texas or any other state, this, Ladies and Gentlemen, is America.
