With class sizes at ridiculous levels (40+ kids class), no teaching
assistants, and rollcall at every class required (6 classes a day),
the teachers ended up being glorified baby sitters. 45 minutes to
teach a class...10 to 15 of that eatten up just by the stupid
rollcall. Combine this with 240 students per teacher (6 x 40) and
when does a teacher have time to grade a test? Read the students'
essays and reports?

I was wondering this to as my school in the 70's was this way. We had at
least 40+ kids in each class. My teacher did a silent roll call by empty
seats while we were doing class work.

In LAUSD, such silent roll so far as I'm aware is not allowed as it
isn't "reliable" enough for the bean counters. -The district's funding
is based directly on attendance...one student out one period actually
reduces that school's funding.

And I'd be curious where you were living with 40+ kids per class in the
70s. That wasn't the norm as it is today. The teachers back then also
often had an assistant and a period off each day, something that's not
very common today (in California).

I went to high school where there was one high school in the morning
and then my high school in the afternoon as they were remodeling my
high school for two years and then I changed to a different part of
the county and went to another school because of the classes offered
that I was interested in.

She also graded papers by an answer key that she had made for
herself/himself.
They would hand out questionnaires with the answers already on them or
fill in the blanks of paragraphs and such. The teacher would create
their own answer sheets via the master but it was theirs and look for
double answers (multiple markings) per question first then slip their
sheets over the top. I guess it would be the Scantron type before the
machines actually got involved..

This only works in a few subjects like math. Subjects like English,
history, forgian language, some of science, etc don't work nearly so
well (at least if you actually are teaching anything).

Such answer key (modern: ScanTron) grading also lends itself to easy
abuse. Even in math, a perfect match for such testing styles, the
teachers often require that they be able to "see the work" that the
students used to reach an answer...not just the correct answer.

Scratch paper got turned in with your name and everything on it also.

Think about it a lot of the schools out there have teachers complaining
about pay when they are making $40,000 a year but wait a minute that is
$40,000 for 10 months of work and "All" Holidays off.

In California, such income is laughable. Have you seen our housing
prices?

Ours is getting there now. My house has more than doubled in the pass
ten years. Actually it is closer to triple value compared to what I
bought it for.

Ok, so we have established that you may be bright. Well then what about
the ability to apply brain power to the ability to make things relate to
common sense. They do not teach this in schools it is typically taught by
parents or guardians as to how to relate things to function and life.

Agreed. Hell, I'd even go on to argue that modern schools go out of
their way to retard such abilities. The modern education system is
largely focused on training people how to follow the pack and never
think for themselves or creatively.

Maybe we do not want to go there at this time. I see how people drive and
it blows it out of the water. Watch how someone walks in the Walmart when
there are others around. They are oblivious to others and do not care as
they push that buggy right out in front of people and stop. Not to
mention when they know someone is behind them they block the entire Isle
as well as stop completely while in front of others and they pretend (or
are) daydreaming of the things they have no intention of buying. They may
be nice to one on the cross isle and let that one out (not to mention when
they get out they stop) while they block and hold up the other 5-15 behind
them getting them upset. Now follow them out to their cars and watch them
as they drive down the road. They do the same thing. They are what they
are and have no consideration or tolerance for ignorance. I do deal with
it but it is just by considering the source of my aggravation and I laugh
at it. I say do as you want to be treated in return and that is how I
pretty much do my life.

Until very recently I'd have agreed with you on all this, 100%.

Now however, not so much. I used to have this idea that being
courteous, showing respect fostered it to be returned. It does not, but
the schools aren't to blame; Human nature is.

What has changed with me is that, while I'm still just as respectful and
courteous as ever, I know hold myself with a very distinct posture. I
hold myself with the expectation they will move out of the way or
otherwise do the courteous thing. I stopped "prepping" myself to turn
to the side to pass them. What I've found is that simply holding myself
with a different posture I'm subconsciously communicating a higher
expectation. The result is that these same numbnuts that typically
would block the isle or run right into you walking in the mall, now
natually just recede, respectfully, out of the way.

I went to the school the other day to pick my kid up for a doctors
appointment and while I was walking down the main area where they also
have study hall and eat lunch in the main hub of the school another
kid (black) was walking down the other side of the area and he crossed
over to my side approximately a 60 foot variance in his path and then
proceeded to walk my way approximately 15 feet more walking at this
time. He literally bumped into me with his shoulder as in a gesture
to get out of his way. Well the 170 (Punk/Twerp) sort of bounced off
of the old man at 265lbs with a definite bounce into a nearby table
and I said "Excuse You" in a rather firm voice and continued my path
of travel without breaking stride. Now to clarify this moment, he was
walking down the other side with a couple of his buddies when he
crossed over to my side. His buddies stayed over on their side and
kept their route. I also observed the twerp afterwards to cross back
over and go down the same hallway that his friends did. The central
hub is lined with offices with glass walls facing inward. So I could
follow their actions. The School Cop when asked what should I of done
he said not make contact with the kid. I told him he was full of it
and that if he had done the same thing to me the same thing would of
happened. He looked at me with a dirty look and I said if you make an
overt act to invade my personal space you deserve what you were asking
for.

I asked my son after I picked him up about the punks action and he
said that they call the "checking" and I told him well I guess it was
"checkmate" and he laughed.

I had another one at the beginning of school during open house
standing and joking around with his gang (about 6-9) of black kids in
the middle of the lunch area that literally stuck his foot behind him
as to try and trip me as I was walking the school walk areas (other
side of lines marking the walk areas. The kid found out why I used to
be referred to as the moving wall when he hooked my foot it actually
got taken with me causing him to turn sideways until my stride
released him. I kept walking without thought and then my wife passed
him as she was catching up to me after visiting the ladies room and
she saw what happened but at that moment the kid started running his
mouth to his friends saying "I ought to go kick his but". My wife
then told him if you want I can call my husband back and you can try".
He shut up and the rest of the "Boys" started laughing loud enough
that I could hear them. I did not hear his boisterous threats of
machoism but I heard there laughs. My wife told me later what had
happened and then I got a chuckle out of it and told her she should of
at least got my attention so I could watch the twerp sweat it.

The point of this is that the kids of nowadays are really into the
mouth routines and trying to impress others but are actually that. All
mouth and little backing if not hit and run.

It is just like the criminals that go around shooting their toy store
paintball markers at things that should not be. If you think about
it, what do they do, "Hit and Run" before they can be seen but they
talk their big stories of their brave acts. They act real big with
their friends on their arms but take and put them into an actual
paintball event/game and they cry and run. They cannot handle it.
There has actually been a few turned in around here by their so called
friends as the people that actually play paintball for a sport did not
want the bad name placed on actual paintball players.
