on our field we have a saying, "you can't wipe a welp".
it's true that all sports have cheaters. it sucks. but speaking from my
admittedly limited knowledge of tournament paintball, it seems that this
is the only sport (that i know of) where cheating is actually bragged
about. the fact that guys (and i have heard it) openly admit to and brag
about their ability to cheat in front of the ref and not get caught
doing it says alot in itself. woods ballers and rec ballers cheat too.
it is an ugly fact of the game. and it is something we all see and deal
with in our own way. speaking only for myself i think that if these
"pros" would put as much time in perfecting their playing skills as they
put into perfecting their cheating skills, they would be great players
(and i mean great as in positive role models and leaders).
today i was shot in the backpack/camelpack i wear for my pods/kit/water.
because i was running forward and shooting at another opponent, i didn't
even realize i was hit. after i eliminated two other guys, one of my
team mates told me i had fresh paint on my pack. i called myself out and
left the field. once i was off the field a guy came over to me and said
he had shot me in the back and i played on anyway. i felt terrible. i
sencerely apologized to him and to the other two guys i put out (after i
was shot). they all understood what hapened and everything was cool.
this is just one of the good things about playing where i do. we're just
there for rec. no money prizes. no trophies. no winners circle. just a
bunch of folks out to have a good time. no pressure to perform a certain
way for the team or for sponsors. perhaps the pressure to win at all
costs is part of the reason for the cheats we see on the tourny circuit.
"if you want us to sponsor you, you better win". i don't know if that is
the case, it's just a thought.
i guess the best way to make a difference (since non of use like the
cheating tha goes on) is to set the proper example to all of the newbies
that come along in our on home fields. when they start playing and see
all of the regulars like me and others and the old timers like tony and
hardtime doing the right thing and having alot of fun, opefully they'll
take that example and run with it. if they make it to the pros then
maybe that example will make it with them. in that tiny way, all of us
could, in a sense, make it to the pros with them. and hopefully we'll
see less need for all of the other negative stuff we dislike so much.
just my two cents (do i get change back?)
.
