Sounds like interference to me.
Indeed, that's the correct answer by the book. Me, I'm a softy at the
9-10 level and if the game allowed (i.e. it wasn't part of a tournament,
it involved locals teams whose coaches I knew) I probably would have
used the situation as a "teachable moment".
I really like when umpires do that. The kids seem to pay more
attention to it.
The fact that there wasn't any contact because the fielders held up isn't
- in my perception - relevant in 9-10-year-old-games. You don't want any
crashes.
Agreed. They'll learn soon enough how to plow each other over.
I'll tell ya, I'm about ready to teach that move so they can use it
when the first baseman is standing on the corner of the base and one
of my kids hits a double... not really, but we keep telling them and
they keep standing in the way. Like you say, they'll get run over and
learn the hard way. My own son had a chance to break the catcher's leg
on Monday...standing right in front of the plate waiting for a throw
and he had to slide. That one scared me as it was about to happen, but
the slide missed the leg.
