Re: PDiddy, His Son and UCLA

True story here. I was a good student at a very small/rural school high school in Missouri. I came in 2nd place in a couple of scholarship deals (was headed for an electrical engineering degree). Net - no scholarship.

So I went to a local community college (Mineral Area College) for 2 years, worked part time in a grocery store, lived at home, actually accumulated money the 1st two years, studied such that I learned stuff (at a community college it is both easier to learn and easier to not learn), and transferred to a very good (and affordable) state engineering school after two years (now the Missouri School of Science and Technology).

I did very well there and with the $3K that my parents had set aside, the money that I earned from a summer internship after my junior year, I was clearly able to pay my full senior year expenses. In early August before my senior year I got a letter from some office at the school offering me a Curator's Scholarship based on my academic record. It was basically all tuition and books. At this same time I had inherited $3K from a great aunt who had died that summer. I would be graduating with a couple thousand (in 1971) in the bank for sure.

This was 1970 (no word processors, etc) so I just scribbled in the margins of the letter (and returned it) saying that l had adequate funds to cover my expenses and that they should simply give these monies to somebody who truly needed it.

From this you might think that I would be critical of PDiddy. But the truth
is that UCLA is going to get services that (in all likelihood) will well exceed the value of the scholarship. In my case the university received nothing (from me had I accepted the scholarship). In fact UCLA would probably prefer that he accept the scholarship as that would make him 'more bound' to the program.
