plausible.
No one is suggesting that it happened, but it's completely plausible.
Here's a related one: A large pharmaceutical company patents a drug to
keep a disease in check. They make so much money from it that they have
no incentive to work on a cure. In return for consideration in other
areas they conspire with other large companies to limit research funding
for a cure for this and other diseases. The disease remains a profit
center for the company for the duration of the patent, at which point
more effective drugs miraculously appear on the market.
Is this totally implausible too?
