Well, it was that time of year again. The annual club tournament. Two
days, 36 holes, all playing members flighted according to a wild guess
about how well they play...

I sucked big time. All last week my timing was off, and today was no
different. The one very long and straight drive I had went into a
convenient lake. Since just short of that same lake is a wonderful
place for 2nd shot, I was aiming for it, 'cause I never drive a ball
that far (about 215 yds, yeah, I'm a short knocker!).

That was one of my better holes. Timing screwed up the drive and
sometimes the 2nd shot. My chipping was pretty good, but wasn't quite
getting within my sure-shot putting distance. Consequently my putts
were 'this close' but not in.

Oh well, tomorrow is another day. And at the end a wonderful potluck
dinner with friends.

Can't beat it, even if my playing sucks pond scum.
You know, even bad golf beats just about everything else. For me it's all about getting exercise, good friends, and doing something challenging enough that you can forget about everything else.

I did the same thing a while ago. The fourth hole at a little muni I play a lot has a creek going across about 100 yards short of the green. It's a long way out but I had found that I could safely blast away with the driver. So of course one time I made absolutely perfect contact and hit a high, slight draw with just enough roll to go over the edge. Happy and sad all at once.

Yeah, you don't know whether to laugh or cry, huh?

One of the nice things about the tournament is the super seniors. Those 75+ that still play. This year we had 3 of them playing and they did pretty good, except for one. He just cannot hit the ball far enough, even from the very forward tees.

He comes out and plays every day, riding 9 holes, only plays the front nine since water isn't an issue there, for the most part.

The other 2 super seniors are both 80+ and both walk the course almost all the time.

It was nice to see them out for this.
Tim Conway (well, one of his role models) was on our course again
today - hope I can still shuffle at 90+.

My worst mixed-feelings shots are those with a fairway wood that I know
can't go over 180 yards, that end up at about 230 in the middle of a
group ahead... /mark the duffer
.
