That's ridiculous. The people who take medicare did not earn the money that is spent.
Same thing for social security and general welfare. "Entitling" people, by whatever
means, to the sequestration of the incomes of other  to suit some need they have is
simply wrong. Medicare is the worst case in point. Relatively poor people, say 25-35
year old age class have to have their incomes taken from them and given to relatively
richer people, say 65-75? So how is it "progressive" to take 12 bucks a week from some
WalMart employee with no health care of his own and then use that money to subsidize
health care costs for some old geezer whose income alone is 2X+ what the kid is
making? How about taking hundreds a month from the same kid to pay for social security
for the relatively wealthier old geezer? Why not at least let the kid save for his own
retirement? It is riduculous to take money from poorer people and give it to richer
people like that.

Well, forgive me, professor. By "people who didn't earn it," I assumed
you meant welfare recipients. People on Medicare spent their entire
working lives paying Medicare taxes. People like you who complain
about how unfair Medicare is never stop to consider why it was
established and what the consequences would be if it had never been
established.- Hide quoted text -

Your arguement holds little water. Just because someone paid some tax
years ago for whatever reason doesn't entitle then to access to my
income. OTOH, I have no problem with supporting indigent people,
disabled people, and people in real need; however, as you know, very
litttle medicare goes to such people. Most medicare goes to people who
have the money to pay for their own health care, but don't want
to...and the result is that relatively poorer, younger working people
pay for health care for relatively older, richer albe bodied people
who don't work...and that's wrong.

Again, people need their income to live their lives, not subsidize
someone else's "active retirement". ...and if people are doing so well
on their incomes despite excessive payroll taxation, why is there so
much debt, and why are all these cheque cashing joints popping up and
doing so well? It's not just that people, especially low income
people, live paycheck to paycheck, but they can't even manage that.
The money that is taken from them and their employers in the name of
SS and medicaid represent welfare payments these people cannot afford.
That money needs to be retained by the workforce for more jobs, better
wages and benefits for people who are actually working.
