One thing I neglected to mention which could be important to your wife.
It is NOT a disfugering operation. The incision is quite small and the
postoperative scar minimal. If she has only the pacemaker installed it
most likely will not even be noiticeable. The defibrillator is a bit of
a different story, it's considerably larger, actually two units in one
metal box. I have a noticeable lump in my left chest area, it shows up
as a rectangle when I wear a golf shirt. In her case, however, maybe
the surgeons could bury it under some breast tissue and even the defib
wouldn't the noticeable.

I had an opportunity to handle the one replaced last year - really,
really a marvel of technology. They have a machined to glass like
exterior and three (for me) electrical connections for plugging in the
three leads from my heart. It's brain will store every beat of your
heart for three (or more) months. Mine is downloaded four times a year
- twice at the pacemaker lab and twice over the telephone. I can sit in
my recliner, hook up the handy-dandy gadget to my telephone and it will
dial an 800 fax number, download three month's of data and shut itself
down in about five minutes. Within four hours I will get a call from
the lab telling me that all is well. My pulse rate is around 100 per
minute, maybe a little less, so in 90 days that smart little jewel
stores almost 13,000,000 bits of information then downloads it on
command. How neat is that?

I've had one now for about 8-9 years, and I've had no trouble playing golf
at all with it. In fact I took my game from shooting in the 100's to
scratch since I had it installed...
