Wow! I had a lesson yesterday and the pro suggested I backswing to a
correct top position, then stop. Next he had me pump several times
with the hips turning first, and then swing through, hitting balls.
Do you have just one pro you take lessons from or are you taking lessons
from the pro du-jour?
Over the years I have bounced between the Director of Golf at my club
and a young former touring pro (Hooter's Tour) who teaches at a
commercial facility in Del Mar, CA.
The young guy teaches the same drills as TPI and uses Video to show
the student his faults. That was very effective in the recent lesson
because I did NOT know I was taking it too high "hoisting." I knew
something was wrong sporatically because I would create a divot that
was ugly, fat, etc.

"pump and go" drill in my backyard putting green.

doing the same drill.
I had been studying that Hogan tip but really didn't "get it" until
the young pro advised me that doing this drill would accomplish two
things-- the "INTENT" to stop and pump would limit my backswing, and I
would teach myself to start the downswing with hips, the transition
weight shift move.
Works for me. I could actually play the course quite effectively
doing that pump before every shot--and will do so until I can ingrain
the correct downswing sequence into a full swing starting from
setup. HOWEVER, if I cannot incorporate the hips first downswing
sequence into a full swing--I will be out there pumping away!!! I
intend to NEVER hit another ball like a turkey high handicapper swing
arms first.
