John, one serious consideration here. While I am not a civil engineer, I
am
an electrical engineer. I found the accuracy of GPS systems to be
troubling
enough to be a "customer satisfaction issue".

I have a Garmin 12XL. A barebones GPS, but one that they put into the
survival packs of USAF pilots. I use it on my ATV. When I find a spot
that has something like a rock strata, I mark it. If I find a meteorite,
I mark it. Then, I can come back, and get pretty close to that point. It
is still amazing when I return how far from the actual spot I am when the
GPS is telling me that I'm there.

GPSs have an "average" function when marking spots. It averages the data
and takes its own guess. On some days when you can't acquire all the
satellites for some reason, accuracy can be up to plus or minus fifty
feet. Okay when trying to get back to a stream crossing, but not okay when
trying to estimate a golf shot with any accuracy. I have never had a GPS
golf device. From what I know from five years of using this one, I
wouldn't want one. GPS is great for a lot of things, but golf wouldn't be
one of them.

Steve

I have an old Garmin 12. It will consistently put me to with a few feet of
a location. Tree cover, buildings, bluffs and even clouds can affect
accuracy, but over all this thing is very accurate.

The GOTO feature is sketchy when you arrive at a location. Don't rely on
that, compare your actual position coordinates with the coordinates of the
waypoint.

The big problem with the Garmin 12 is that is only measures in fractions of
a mile or kilometer. How many yards is .09 miles? Nobody wants to do that
math while selecting a club
