What is it that attracts/attracted you to golf? Give me some insight on
your ideas of what golf does for people.
There are lots of standard answers to this question -- the
challenge, the mental demands, etc. -- but honestly, what
makes golf so essential to me is the violence.
I am not kidding.
The satisfaction of releasing the club and catching the ball
right in the sweet spot, sending it screaming toward the target
(more or less, anyway) is a huge stress vent for me. I could
hit a punching bag instead, I guess, but would it fly 400 RSG
yards down the fairway? No. In golf, I get to watch the victim
of my violence hurtle through the sky for awhile after I hit
it. I love this.
Otherwise, I have a more standard answer: In golf, I chase that
state of zen in which I focus so well on the task at hand that
I lose track of everything else -- my score, my bank balance,
my projects at work, etc. In that zenlike state there is a
calm, the genuine peace of a man who goes about his business
with no fear. We play our best in that state, and I think we
live best in that state as well.
