He can skip the first round because the format is not single-elimination;
rather, it is based on total points.
And he has almost twice as many points as the player below him.
to call that "almost twice as many". Moot now anyway, the points have
been reset. Tiger has 100,000, Vijay has 99,000, Furyk has 98,500,
etc.
Tiger will play the Deutsche Bank, since the TW Foundation benefits. I
assume he'll play the Tour Championship, since it carries some
prestige. Will he play the BMW? Maybe, if he gets interested in
winning this thing, and needs to play to have a chance to win. It may
not be likely, but it's possible the guys fairly close to him won't
earn many points this week. Tiger could do well at the Deutsche Bank,
get a nice lead, and figure he doesn't need to play the BMW. I'd like
to see exciting playoffs, but I fear there's a good chance it won't
turn out as well as they hope.
McAtee interviewed Finchem on CBS yesterday, and he said, at least
twice, that he was disappointed Tiger was skipping the first playoff
tourney. I'm sure he is. I was a little surprised to hear him say it.
