This stat is pretty cool too: Proximity from fairway. The top 5
(Mickelson, Woods, Sindelar, Verplank and DiMarco) are all 25 to 26
feet. Maybe my expectations of hitting it close are too high if the the
best tour players have that much dispersion.

That's an average of all approach shots, even fairway woods presumably.
I'll bet if they only measured wedge shots it would be a lot different.
Also remember that these guys often play to "tucked" sucker pins.
When Tiger is really on his game in a Major, he rarely hits it stiff to
these pins because he isn't trying to. He'll leave himself 15-footers
for birdie all day. If he's putting well, he wins.

Well, and isn't that the lesson here? If these guys, playing from
the tips, and hitting woods to the green with tucked pins are STILL
shooting below par while leaving themselves 25 feet from the pin,
what real purpose is served for us in trying to "stick it close"?
Shouldn't we be shooting for the fat/safe part of the green and
then working on our putting to get us in the hole in 2 more strokes?

Also, there is a big difference between being able to control the
distance correctly and distance from the hole. You could hit perfect
distance, but if you hit an ugly pull you still might be 30-feet from
the cup.

This is almost as frustrating as 3 putts. Nice tee shot,
choose a good second shot to place me just the right distance
from the pin. Pull the right wedge for the shot to the green.
Hit exactly the right distance.... to the opposite side of the
green 5 feet into the rough.
