Mistake #1, you say you're a high handicapper and you hit driver.
I've heard this before, and tried putting it in practice. But if I
can
shank my driver OB, I can also shank my 3 wood, or 3 iron for that
matter. Basically I find this advice far more useful on par 4's and
dog legs where one can drive through fairways into trouble, even
on well struck shots.
RSG advice is worth what you pay for it, so here's my -.02:
if solid contact is a problem for a high hcp'r, then a modern large
head driver isn't such a bad idea. Maybe choke up a bit if the landing
area is tight.
if solid contact is not a problem, and long irons** or hybrids go
pretty good, then maybe play to the vicinity of the 150 marker with
what ever stick gets you there and not much more.
**I know of more than one 95-105 shooter that can hit an oversize 3-4
iron pretty good when it's on a tee.
