Greens GENERALLY slope back to front, and have crap behind them. Green
GENERALLY have at worst a bunker in front, and often just fairway. So
the penalty for missing long is greater than missing short. Obviously
one must weigh each shot for what it is and note what side of the green
is the safe "miss", if there is one.

All true, but for most greens, the difference between missing it 10
yards short and hitting it all the way over the green (which usually
slopes to the fairway) is 30 yards (3 full clubs).
So why hit a 7i
140 due to a slight flub instead of hitting a 5i 160 in the very
likely eventuality you will similarly flub that? Just smart golf.

Maybe it depends on your skill level and what type of "misses" you
have.

Let's say to the center of the green is 150. The green is 30 yards
deep. So you can hit the ball between 135 and 165 (if straight), and
still hit the green.

Are you going to pull the 160 yard club if you're trying to hit it to
the center of the green? I'm not. I rarely hit a ball heavy. I
mean, 1 in 100 I hit heavy, MAYBE. This is not an RSG exaggeration.
So I'm going to pull the 150 club, and if I do hit it heavy, I'll hit
it 140 at worst. So I still hit the green, and most likely I have an
uphill putt.

If I pull the 160 club, and hit it 160, I have a downhill putt. If I
thin it, I'm really screwed.
