The best advice you're ever going to hear about scoring came from my
Head Pro the other day. He said most of us (the members) miss most
greens short--and end up scrambling to recover. They miss routinely
because we all seem to think we are going to hit the perfect shot we
made on the range (after hitting that same club 5 times in a row). So
we conclude that our standard 7i distance is that distance. It isn't.
No doubt most amateurs miss it short, expecting the perfect shot.
However, one must be cautious because many times hitting it long is
MUCH worse than hitting it short.
Greens GENERALLY slope back to front, and have crap behind them. Green
GENERALLY have at worst a bunker in front, and often just fairway. So
the penalty for missing long is greater than missing short. Obviously
one must weigh each shot for what it is and note what side of the green
is the safe "miss", if there is one.
