It's funny ... I've heard and read this a hundred times ... but in my experience (admittedly not that extensive) there's usually a *lot* more trouble behind a green than in front. Obviously it depends on the specific hole, and maybe it's just because a I play a lot at fairly easy muni courses, but leaving a ball on the front edge of a green is most often a pretty good place to be. To me, that's usually a good chance for an U&D par, whereas a ball behind the green is a good chance for a bogey (or often worse). Also, since most greens slope back-front, being behind the pin usually means a tougher downhill putt. Maybe it's just me ... but I think I'm actually pretty honest with myself in club selection and distance ... maybe that advice is more true for higher handicappers.
