The best advice you're ever going to hear about scoring came from my
Head Pro the other day. He said most of us (the members) miss most
greens short--and end up scrambling to recover. They miss routinely
because we all seem to think we are going to hit the perfect shot we
made on the range (after hitting that same club 5 times in a row). So
we conclude that our standard 7i distance is that distance. It isn't.

It's funny ... I've heard and read this a hundred times ... but in my experience (admittedly not that extensive) there's usually a *lot* more trouble behind a green than in front. Obviously it depends on the specific hole, and maybe it's just because a I play a lot at fairly easy muni courses, but leaving a ball on the front edge of a green is most often a pretty good place to be. To me, that's usually a good chance for an U&D par, whereas a ball behind the green is a good chance for a bogey (or often worse). Also, since most greens slope back-front, being behind the pin usually means a tougher downhill putt. Maybe it's just me ... but I think I'm actually pretty honest with myself in club selection and distance ... maybe that advice is more true for higher handicappers.
