Stomping around in search of a sprinkler head that has "162" stamped on it
is a complete waste of time. Before they invented the 150-yard marker, we
used a formula that worked better than numbers. Determine what club you'd
need to use -- with $1,000 riding on it -- to fly the ball over the green.
You have to be honest with yourself: There's $1,000 at stake, so you better
not underclub. If that club is a 6-iron, simply take one club less -- the
7-iron -- and hit it firmly or softly depending on whether the hole is
front, middle or back. The formula never fails. It also teaches you feel,
touch and a sense for wind and elevation. One more thing: It'll cut half an
hour off your round.

I think about this all the time when I look at Lasers and GPS gadgets that
I'd love to have. I love the way these "old guys" approach the game. I think
after reading some stuff from guys like Burke and Ben Hogan that they
were/are just so talented that their advice is almost arrogant to the rest
of us.

Ben Hogan 1957 in FIVE LESSONS

"there's nothing difficult about golf, nothing. I see no reason, truly, why
the average golfer, if he goes about it intelligently, shouldn't play in the
70's- and I mean by playing the type of shots a fine golfer plays."

The best advice you're ever going to hear about scoring came from my
Head Pro the other day. He said most of us (the members) miss most
greens short--and end up scrambling to recover. They miss routinely
because we all seem to think we are going to hit the perfect shot we
made on the range (after hitting that same club 5 times in a row). So
we conclude that our standard 7i distance is that distance. It isn't.

On the course he says we would score lower if we adjust for likely
less than clean impact, less than perfect lie, wind, and bad bounces
etc. That means choosing at least one MORE club. If your ball is
out that optimum 7i distance, choose the 6i at least and maybe the 5i
so we can swing smoothly to ensure the ball lands pin-high even if we
duff it.

When chipping or putting, Pels says amateurs fail to score because we
miss it mostly short and below the hole. When touring pros are asked
what advice they would give all amateurs, it is always "get it to the
hole!" They mean that from the fairway as well as from beside or on
the green.

You will be amazed at the diffence that adjustment will make in a
routine round. Get it to the hole!
