Palm Springs Golf Report (long!)

Just back after a lovely 12 day break.

The weather in Palm Springs was great as always. The wife is now a
golf addict and I played 10 rounds in 12 days! 6 Rounds were on full
length courses and 4 on executive courses.

The full courses were Rancho Mirage Country Club, Cimarron Boulder
Course, Tahquitz Creek Resort course, Indian Springs Country Club,
Woodhaven Country Club and Escena Golf Club.

Executive rounds were Cimarron Pebble course and Oasis Country Club
(three times).

The first round of the holiday was the Rancho Mirage Country Club. We
were paired with two other Canadians from the Vancouver area. The
round was basically a hackfest. The course was reasonable, but nothing
spectacular. I have been fighting a bad hook and this round was more
of a practice round than anything else. $69.

Second round was at Cimarron. Man I love that course. Greens and
fairways in excellent shape and a very links style course. We were
paired with two women in their early 60's I guess. The one shot lights
out and was an absolute pleasure to watch. The tempo rubbed off on us
and I shot an 84. Hardly used the driver and used 5-iron off most
tees. Longer irons into the green, but it didn't seem to matter. $59
and great value.

Third round at Tahquitz resort course. Lost tempo and swing and hacked
out a 94! The one guy that played with us was a gent from Rhode
Island. He is friends with Dana Quigley. He was amazing to watch
around the greens and on approach shots. I hooked my way around the
course. $69.

Thursday we went back to Cimarron to play the Pebble(executive)
course. Worked on trying to get rid of the hook and practiced the
short game. $29 and great value

Friday we played the executive course where we stayed, the Oasis
Country Club. It is actually in very good shape. Had a great round and
shot a 70 (par 60). $35 before 1130 and $25 after.

Saturday no golf. Sunday we played our little home course again.
Actually coached the wife and did not score.

Monday we played Indian Springs. This course is in fantastic shape and
we played in under 3 1/2 hours. I shot 86. This is where some of the
frustration of desert golf crept in. The balls go further in the
desert and it took a while to adjust to this. I hit an approach to a
green on one hole. GPS said it was 160 yards to the center of the
green. I wanted to hit it short , as there was water all around the
green. I chose 9-iron and flew the green. (It was a clean hit.) On the
par 5 18th, I hit a great drive and decided to lay up on my second
shot. There was water 180 yards ahead. I took a 7 iron and promptly
hit it into the water. I finally started grasping RSG distances. $79
and a fun course to play.

Tuesday the wife went shopping and I played Escena. This is a brand
new Nicklaus design in Palm Springs and it was in suberb shape. I was
paired with two folks from San Diego. The course was pretty quiet, as
I had decided to tee off at 1130. I hit absolutely everything and the
driver kept going straight. Shot 78 and broke 80 for the first time in
my lfe. Double bogied the last hole, which pi**ed me off, as I had
just hit a monster drive. I absolutely hooked my lay up shot into the
water. Great value for $65.

Wednesday we played Woodhaven. This is pretty much like Rancho Mirage
was. $45 was good value though. Had a great first 9, shooting 38. On
the tenth hole, I stepped up to my ball after a nice drive and saw
that my proV1 had morphed into a Nike. My wife had hit my ball. The
two balls had been quite close together, so I decided to simply ignore
this, and also ignored the supposed 2 stroke penalty. This completely
destroyed my rhythm and I had to work hard to keep it together. On 16,
after a wayward tee shot, I drove up to where my ball was supposed to
be. One guy we had been playing with had also hit his ball in this
direction and he found his and hit it. Mine was gone. It was sharp
dogleg right and I had hit it right and finally found my ball next to
the green. Surprise turned to horror when it turned out that this
other guy had hit my ball. Twice in nine holes for pete's sake. Took
my maximum on this hole and that pretty much ended my fun for the day.

Took Thursday off and played our little executive course again on
Friday. The hook reared its ugly head , but a fun round nonetheless.

Next time we go, I will go early May. Most of the courses drop their
rates at the end of April.

The other frustration of the courses we played was the sand. The times
I went into the sand, all the courses have 1/4 inch fluffy sand with
rock hard sand underneath. I skulled a number of shots, as the sand
wedge would bounce off the hard sheit. Even the nicer courses had this
problem. Apparently, if they use the soft silica type sand, the wind
just blows it away.

Got back to Vancouver and it is wet wet wet. Hopefully the weather
will improve and I can get out and keep up the momentum.
