I used to cut lawns as a kid. How many kids today do that for side
income?
Answer: very few Why? Because the pool of cheap labor is large and
they are willing to work for less. They are also organized and can do
more yards per day than a single kid can. Thus they can charge less
per house. Is it a benefit to society to have 6-8 of these workers
living in a single apartment and sending a bulk of their income back to
Mexico? No. Do we help them by providing this kind of work? In the
short term yes, in the long term, no.
Also, kids are richer now. Why work a couple of hours for $5, when
you can get Mommy to give it to you now?
One of the strengths of our economy is that middle class kids have
tend to have jobs. They learn to work, and screw-ups don't stick
with them throughout their careers. I've seen well-to-do kids from
other countries envy us in that - mainly because our kids get more
freedom to spend earned money as they will.
But if you give them the big allowance, they are less motivated to get
these jobs.
=====================
Even wealthy people don't have the servants that the middle class used
to have. They spend millions on old mansions and have to figure how
to get the kitchen near the dining room instead of having the servants
use the dumb waiters. The poor are getting richer in wealthy
countries, and don't need jobs that have them living in one room
servant's quarters.
