My problem is a tendency to get the club >pointed left of the target atthe top

if this is the case, a corrective measure might be to align the old bod
with the target, and let the shaft momentarily touch a designated spot
on the shoulder that would indicate - proper alignment.(you can't be
lackadaisical - firm up)
but, at the beginning of the downswing you want to drop the hands
straight down and close to the body while aiming the ***-end of the
club at the target, all this while zeroing in on the ball for a solid
impact.
Grip loosely, throw the clubhead at the ball - follow through and over,
and away it goes, straight down the target line.
